Nominal Group Technique (NGT)

The Nominal Group Technique (NGT) is a structured process in which representatives can discuss, diminish, and prioritize ideas or solutions. It deals with carrying out the activity during which people give their ideas of their response to the topic or problem. One by one, each participant becomes active to do so, and subsequently, the group deliberates on and clarifies every idea. Further, once all ideas are presented and discussed, participants agree on to either vote using pre-determined placed criteria or engage in ranking to prioritize them. NGT fosters inclusive engagement through equal participation, creates space for every individual to be heard, and uses the sum of powers of all group members to reach a superior quality outcome. It comes in handy in many processes and sessions of decision-making, problem-solving, brainstorming activities, etc., which span business, education, healthcare, and civic to leverage from the huge pool of collective knowledge and expertise of the group.

Example Of Nominal Group Technique

Operating as a team of executives within a corporate setting, the group used the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) to devise a new marketing campaign. The participants were tasked to identify personally different types of inventive advertising strategies that would aid in marketing an ostensibly youthful demographic group. Everyone got their say as they revealed their outlines, amongst others were themes of utilizing social media influencers, organizing interesting online events, and creating viral pieces of content. Through the organization work in which every suggestion was presented and then discussed by every member of the group, together they figured the advantages and disadvantages of each presented idea. To conclude, the team presented for the executives with various ideas after a lengthy discussion. Moreover, the executives voted for the strategies that were deemed feasible. Through the NGT process, the team identified the top three ideas: organizing a user-generated content contest, cooperating with celebrities in the gaming sector, and choosing the right place to place the advertisement via social networks. Such teamwork has been central to developing these skills, allowing for innovative thinking, reaching agreement, and ultimately achieving victory in marketing.
