Glossary / Buddy System

Buddy System

The Buddy System is a mentoring or support arrangement whereby an inexperienced employee or a trainee is assigned a buddy who may be a more experienced colleague or a mentor who offers help and training during the performance of duties. The buddy system has as its goal the achievement of the integration and orientation of the newcomers, faster learning curve, and the partners and communication within the organization. Buddies function as mentors, exemplars, and advocates by, among other things, giving counsel, sharing the knowledge and guiding the newbies on how to overcome the challenges that they might face when they begin their roles and in the new environment.

Example of Buddy System

A law firm establishes a buddy system which serves associates joining the firm and the legal profession. Every associate coming on board is matched with an attorney or partner who is the buddy and mentor of the associate during the onboarding process and the future too. The buddy is responsible for providing guidance on the company's policies and procedures, introducing the new hire to important people and resources, and sharing perspectives on the company's culture, expectations, and professional identity. Moreover, the supervisor provides guidance, coaching, and mentorship to assist the novice attorney in acquiring legal skills, establishing client relationships, and dealing with the intricacies of legal practice. The buddy system is a win-win initiative for new associates because they receive individualized guidance and mentorship, while senior attorneys contribute to the firm's future talent development and succession planning which leads to creation of a culture of learning, sharing and professional advancement.
