Glossary/Equity

Equity

As for the recruitment and human resources, equity implies the approach of fairness and impartiality in the treatment of employees, providing equal opportunities to all employees and respecting them regardless of their race, gender, age, sexual orientation or disability. The notion of equity extends to different areas of employment such as hiring, promotion, wage policy, trainings, and the corporate culture. It encompasses the identification and removal of systemic barriers and biases that make it difficult for people from certain groups to succeed and the implementation of strategies that promote such an environment.

Example of Equity

The human resources department of a multinational company started an equity plan that was meant for creating a diverse and inclusive work environment. Within the framework of this program, the company arranged unconscious bias training for hiring managers, which helped them deal with biases and eliminate them in the recruitment procedure. Also, the company revised its job description and qualification criteria to make sure they were not exclusive and did not inadvertently exclude people from underrepresented populations. In addition, the HR unit made a concerted effort to increase diversity in executive management by administering focused recruitment and mentorship programs for employees from various backgrounds. These programs promoted a fair work environment where everybody was respected, and individuals who demonstrated potential for progression were fully supported.
