Glossary/Temp to Hire

Temp to Hire

Temp to Hire, also referred to as temp-to-perm or temporary-to-permanent placement, is when an organization takes a candidate on a temporary or contractual basis while evaluating their performance, fit, and potential for a permanent position. The temp-to-hire program allows employers to assess a candidate's skill set, work ethic, and cultural compatibility before making a long-term hiring decision avoiding the risks associated with direct hires. When the try-out employee succeeds and the management is satisfied with their performance, they may be made a permanent member of the organization.

Example

A software development company utilizes a temp-to-hire staffing model in order to hire a missing software engineer. The company, instead of hiring the candidate directly, allots the task to a staffing agency which selects the appropriate candidates on a temporary contract basis. The selected candidate will become a contract worker of this organization and will be assigned to the specific projects and tasks under the supervision of the permanent team personnel for a stipulated probation period of 3 to 6 months. In the course of temp-to-hire period, the company reviews technical skills, teamwork and cultural fit of the candidate to the organization. If the candidate shows their suitability for the role, as well as collaboration and alignment with the company's values and goals, they will be given the opportunity to join the company on a permanent basis, starting from a temporary contractor position and becoming full-time employee. Temp-to-hire mechanism makes it possible for the company to gauge candidates' fit for permanent positions while at the same time, maintaining the needed adaptability and minimizing hiring risks.
