Glossary/Sabbatical

Sabbatical

Sabbatical is time off granted to employees, and may last from a few weeks to a year. While on sabbatical, employees are relieved of regular duties. Sabbaticals might be spent for personal improvement, travel, further studies, or to prevent burnout and promote employee's health. Although not all organizations provide sabbaticals as standard benefit packages, the ones that do understand the importance of this perk in maintaining employee engagement, retention, and career growth.

Example of Sabbatical

An employee at a technology company does not stop working for several years without taking a vacation. Recognizing the fact that personal growth and job satisfaction go hand in hand, the company provides a sabbatical program allowing employees to take longer leave to relax and enrich their lives. The worker chooses to avail of this opportunity by visiting abroad, interacting with many cultures, and participating in a sustainable technology passion project. During the sabbatical, employees leave their work responsibilities behind, plunge themselves into new experiences, and come back energized and excited, sharing new approaches and ideas with the rest of the team.
